Everyone knows of those special places that we all search for.  Places that can only be photographed; not described with words like, "man, you should have seen it out there!"

Join Shane Black in, "Adventure is Calling," as he captures his vision of some of the most remarkable places and parks in the US.  if this doesn't make you want to get out, I'm not sure what will. 

This summer, two friends and myself all left our comfortable jobs of six years to spend two months traveling across the country and teaching photography workshops along the way. We all felt that it was time to take a risk and get out of our comfort zones... adventure was calling us. It was a trip filled with endless hours cooped up in a van, exploring breathtaking landscapes, sharing stories and laughs, meeting some of the nicest people, making new friends, getting to meet old friends from around the country, and sharing our love of photography with others. This trip was a constant test for me, as we had such short and limited time in nearly all of the spots we visited. In most cases, I'd have to hurry out of the van with all of my gear and find a decent composition in a very short amount of time as soon as we would arrive at the location. It was a constant race against the light. During those 2 months, we traveled across 32 states , visited 13 national and state parks, and drove nearly 13,000 miles in a (somewhat) trusty old Dodge Caravan... with no cruise control. It was an adventure that gave us many memories that we will all hold onto for many years to come. I think that everybody needs to take a trip and have their eyes opened to just how beautiful this world is and how much is really out there. Meet Jack English, a 93-year-old legend who lives in a cabin isolated deep in the Ventana Wilderness. While on a hunting trip he learned that an old homestead in the Ventana Wilderness was being put up for auction by the estate of a childless heiress. He put a bid on the property and won. On the land he built a small cabin using materials from the land and milling trees by hand. When his wife passed away, Jack effectively left "society" and moved to the cabin full time.

He spent two months pedaling and pushing the bike more than 1200 km on roads of variable states of neglect, wading through wild rivers, dealing with corrupt military checkpoint staff, and soloing a handful of unclimbed alpine rock and mixed routes. He recorded the journey, his camera his only partner, friend, and sometimes the only receiving end of his conversations for days at a time. In 2013, Kyle’s self-shot footage of his journey in Kyrgyzstan made it to the desk of filmmakers Fitz Cahall and Austin Siadak, who were asked to look at the footage and see if there might be enough to chop together a 4-minute climbing film. They saw a lot more potential in it, and turned it into the 25-minute “The Road From Karakol,” which debuted at the 5Point Film Festival and took home the Best In Fest award. Looking for a rack?  Prepare to be overwhelmed; there's a lot of options.

First, consider the base system - towers, bars and mounting.  Most of the major roof rack manufacturers have got it figured out for you, you just need to think about strength.

Next step, what are you carrying and where are you going -

In a pickup or sport utility, you've got plenty of room to toss your gear, but the space fills up quick on extended trips.  Why not put it on top? 

Whether it's a basket or a roof platform, these options will increase your gear handling capabilities.  They're also crucial for stashing muddy gear, fuel and other items you don't want in your cap or trunk space. 

We built this platform out of 1x steel tubing and decked it with 1x6 and 1x2 cedar planks; cedar is one of the more weather resistant wood options and it light - we didn't want to coat the decking with anything toxic, i.e. sealant.  

Mounted on crossbars and lifted with rain gutter mounts, it should give serve MSO's needs.
